Checking In: One Bunk in the Barrio
There’s just something about staycations. Taking the opportunity to explore parts of a city that I have lived in for almost a decade, still gets me excited. A chance to escape the craziness of our schedules for just a couple of days with the littles in tow, and all the while with little travel effort, sign me up! Don’t get me wrong, I love to fly, and can’t wait for adventures that are getting up on the calendar for this year, but you can’t beat a 20 minute drive sometimes. We often venture to San Diego's Barrio Logan to visit some of our favorite eateries, but those are always quick stops. As a writer, new scenery, fresh air, and creative spaces could not be better for the soul. As we walked into the apartment, One Bunk, it was like a rush of inspiration came over me. The interiors of the space, while with industrial and crisp modern accents, are filled with warmth through wool textiles, and gorgeous handmade goods from both sides of the border. I felt like I was stepping into a room that could be part of my own house. The eclectic pieces, keep the eye wandering, and make this 500 sq ft apartment all that more special. The mini fridge is packed with Tijuana’s Insurgente craft beers and other refreshments. You also can’t miss the tiniest bottles of Meteoro mezcal, that I ever did see.
We set down our belongings, and headed out through the back door to the private garden area. The kids eyes lit up, as they were already planning how many times they could go up and down the stairs to hang out next to the paleta cart. Although, I had to explain that there was no real ice cream inside, they still had fun pointing to their favorite choices. The outdoor space is absolutely stunning. A little grassy area, where we set up picnics with the littles, a currently empty shipping container that Camila enjoyed running laps in, and a quaint seating area. In my head I was secretly planning out the amazing dinner parties, and events that could take place there.
On the second day of our stay, we had the chance to crack open an Insurgente beer with proprietor/builder Greg Strangman, and chat about his passion behind this project, and his ever growing love for Baja. There are plans of expansion to carry on into Tijuana in late Spring of 2016, and eventually Valle de Guadalupe as well. This is set to be Tijuana's first boutique hotel, situated on the renowned Revolution street. Tijuana's One Bunk location promises to not only be a great place to stay, but also just a rad spot to hang out at.
It was incredibly convenient each morning to hop right across the street to Cafe Moto, for our daily caffeine fuel, and later walk around with the littles, exploring the local murals and parks. I felt like One Bunk was more than an ideal spot to stay with our two kids in tow. The location is perfect for enjoying some great bites, delicious coffee, and even more so checking out a part of San Diego that has some truly incredible art.
